Hello
My name is Colin although I publish my work under the brand 'Silver Jack Photography'.
Below you can find out a bit more about me and my approach to photography.
I occasionally run workshops for beginners to photography and creative workshops for those looking for inspiration or finding themself in a rut with their own work. Please see my workshop page for more details.
My Story
I've been told I sound like the Artful Dodger from the film adaptation of Charles Dickens 'Oliver Twist' and was once described as 'that cheeky cockney barrow boy'.
Which is unsurprising since I'm a born and bred Londoner.
I've worked in London all my life, even as a child (!) when during the school holidays, I could often be found helping my father, who drove a large goods vehicle around London, delivering heavy office goods around the City. This was from when I was seven years of age... a bit like some of the characters in Dickens books in fact!
But on those rounds we'd meet all manner of old London characters, who, when I think back, had a big influence my approach to photography.
They were authentic people, some a bit rough around the edges, but real.
And thats where my photography is based.
In an ever developing digital world with Ai pushing boundaries between reality and fake, I like to keep my photography in the realm of the authentic.
My primary style is black and white, grainy and often with movement. By removing the distraction of colour, the essence of the person in front of the camera becomes the primary focus.
I do delve into colour very occasionally as I explore more abstract like work which allows me to experiment with different photographic techniques and expressions.
I have a keen interest in music, poetry (reading and trying my own hand at it..) in particular Japanese Haiku and I have studied world cinema at evening classes, all of which also inspires my work
I live in Surrey with my wife but when not doing my portrait work, am often found with camera in hand, leading little tours wandering the streets of the City or on my motorbike exploring wider afield.
Please contact me via the contact page for details of my tours / workshops.
